The rain was hammering down on to the car as Tina was driving home from the city. It was dark and the hypnotic repeating of the windscreen wipers was reassuring as they cleared the screen. About half way home the roads were dark, she had left the city behind and the country roads were not lit at all, visibility was difficult so she was not driving fast until suddenly all of the lights on her dashboard illuminated and the car just died. Crawling to a standstill Tina slowly pulled over to the side of the road. “Ah shit, that’s all I need!” Tina said to herself as she pulled out her mobile phone to call the breakdown company. “Brilliant, no signal, sodding phone,” she continued. Tina looked around and through the back window she could just make out a dim orange street light shining on a small house completely standing on its own. She looked in the back seat for a coat which she did not bring with her. She was wearing a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, some ankle boots and patterned socks. Looking out of the window she exclaimed. “Well, I’m going to get soaked but here goes.” She opened the car door and immediately stood in a puddle but leapt out and shut the door. The house was about a quarter of a mile away and Tina started running towards it getting more and more soaked by the rain with every step. windows in the upstairs floor. She knocked on the faded, green door. The door slowly opened about 6 inches. “Ello,” a man’s voice said from the shadows. “Hi, um, my car has broken down, would it be ok to use your phone to call the breakdown people?” Tina said as the rain pelted down onto her. The door slowly opened and in the doorway stood a man, mid fifties with a balding head, he was dressed in trousers and a woollen jumper. “Come on in love, course you can,” he said with a wry grin. Tina smiled and followed him inside. The house was warm as she followed him into the living room. “The phone is over there love,” the man said while pointing to the corner of the room. Tina quickly picked up the receiver, dialled the number and was relieved to hear a friendly voice on the other end. It took about five minutes to organise the breakdown company to come and rescue her car, the female voice on the other end of the line advised Tina that she couldn’t get anyone there for two hours so Tina thought it was okay, she would wait in the car. When she put down the phone the man turned to her. “All okay love? You are soaked, there are some spare clothes upstairs from when my daughter comes over, and you look about her size. I’ll take you up and you can get changed in her room,” the man said and beckoned Tina to the stairs “Come on then!” the man said to her impatiently. Tina thought she didn’t have a lot of other options, she was absolutely soaked through and had to get out of these clothes ...
